Encouraging Pollinators!

What might you do to encourage pollinators in your yard and community?

Pollinators include all kinds of creatures, like bees, butterflies, bats, dragonflies, beetles, hummingbirds, moths, wasps, flies, and some small mammals. Pollinating creatures are important because they pollinate the plants which grow the food we eat. Additionally, as Pollinator.org indicates the pollinators “support healthy ecosystems that clean the air, stabilize soils, protect from severe weather, and support other wildlife.” Have you considered putting a pollinator garden in your yard? How about planting some trees or shrubs that encourage pollinators? Here’s an excellent native tree, shrub, and plant availability guide from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s Bureau of Natural Resources Wildlife Division and the University of Connecticut’s College of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources Department of Extension. This list is specific to the New England area (USA), and it can give you a starting point for planting ideas. Another place to look for information is the Pollinator Pathway’s website. They offer ideas about constructing your pollinator garden or planting boxes/pots, and is a great resource for ideas on how to get your community involved. Enjoy learning and gardening!
